(M)ushroom spore Plasmogamy is a Fusion of Hyphae. Spore cell reproduction begins with plasmogamy, the fusion of the two compatible mycelial strains. Each strain contributes its hyphal cells, and these cells undergo a fusion where the cytoplasm from each cell merges. However, during plasmogamy, the nuclei from the two different (M)ushroom strains do not immediately combine. Instead, the result is a dikaryotic cell, meaning that it contains two distinct; genetically separate nuclei, one from each strain, within the same cell.
At this stage, the mycelium is dikaryotic, and the two nuclei coexist in each cell but (W)ill not yet fuse.
